Chelsea Buns!

During Tech today in cooking class, we were working on making bread. Some made bread rolls, some made chelsea buns and others made Maori bread. Here is the following steps on how to make Chelsea Buns.

Ingredients:
  • ¼ cup warm water
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • 2 tsp Edmonds active yeast
  • 3½ cups Edmonds high grade flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • ¾ cup warm milk
  • 3 Tbsp melted butter
Filling:
  • 50g of butter, softened
  • ½ of brown sugar
  • 1 tsp of cinnamon

First we had one separate bowl and added together the warm water, the active yeast and the sugar. We stirred it together and then placed the mixture in the warming drawer which is located underneath the oven/stove.

While the yeast was creating a frothy mixture in the drawer, we sieved together the dry ingredients which was the flour, the salt and the sugar. Next, we made a well in the dry ingredients and added the melted butter along with the milk and the frothy yeast mixture. We mixed it up well and incorporated the ingredients together with a wooden spoon until it becomes a ball of dough.

Then we dusted a flat surface with a flour shaker so the dough does not stick to the surface. We then kneaded the dough until it became a soft dough. We grabbed out the rolling pins and rolled the dough until it became a soft, thin rectangle. We brushed on the rest of the melted butter and added the filling which contained of cinnamon and brown sugar. The next step was to roll it up into a long roll and cut it up into medium sized pieces.

After that we placed it in the oven at 200 degrees until it was golden brown. The aroma of Chelsea buns filled the room when it was cooked and the students were ready to take their food back to school and devour the delicious baking.
