Assembly 2018

Prize giving 2018

On the 12th of December 2018, Saint Patrick's School had their 2018 Prize giving and also our very last school assembly of the year. I received a certificate for Road Patrols and Peer Mediators. I am mostly proud of the award that I received for representing Saint Patrick's School by being the Manaiakalani Ambassador. As well as Prize giving, each class had a Christmas song or item to perform as shown on the pictures below.

Experiment: Colour changing Milk

Materials:
-saucer (small plate)
- 50 ml of milk
- 2 drops of different colours of food coloring
- squirt of detergent

Hypothesis:
Our hypothesis is that the colours will break its separation between themselves and will mix together when the detergent is added.

What had happened:
Our hypothesis was valid because as we applied the 3 unique colours into the milk, it had tension between them. However, when detergent was added it started to break its tension allowing the colours to bleed and blend into each other.

Chemistry Oobleck

Rosary, Soane, Mana experiment Oobleck (Outside)
Oobleck is a mixture of cornstarch and water based on how much pressure is applied to it. When the mixture is handled, it is formed into a ball but when pressure is released it flows into a liquid, like texture. This suspension only contains two ingredients. Here is the method on how to create it.

Method:
What we need:
-½ cup of Cornstarch
-1 cup of water
-Bowl
-Measuring cups,
-Mixing tools
-Newspaper to keep area tidy
-Food Colouring (Optional)

What to do:
  1. Place cornstarch into the container
  2. Then add  water with the cornstarch
  3. If necessary and  more water or cornstarch until you gets a mixture that ‘tears’ when you quickly scrape your finger through it and then ‘melts’ back together again.
  4. Knead it and mix it with your fingers and see what happens

Observations: Our first attempt started with a liquidy substance and at first we thought that we had failed the experiment.  But we didn't stop there so then we added more corn starch and a tiny amount of water while we mixed it the substance started to harden making the oobleck harder to mix. We then added food colouring to change the colour from white then to a minty green and blue. Now for the testing we first tried the attempt of pushing the oobleck. It was a successful attempt at making it but then the challenge was to see if is would stay solid in our hands while playing with the texture then would turn liquid when releasing pressure from it.

Astria: Countdown to Impact-Top 5 things to know if a news source is providing false information

With increasing online and digital content, it is difficult to know real information from 'fake news'. Using evidence from the game you played (Astria: Countdown to Impact) write a blog to list .the top 5 things you think people should watch out for to help identify fake news
From the critical thinking game that I have recently played with a partner, these are my ideas that I had gathered using the evidence I have collected.
1. Spelling Mistakes
Usually if a news source has certain spelling mistakes or the words are grammatically incorrect, it looks as if though the news source had rushed to get their source of information out and didn't take time to re-read and check the evidence that is given out to the world. Keep a look out for these types of news sources...😳
2. Check the sources
There are many popular sources that release news and most of them release factual and true information. If your reading a news article and the source is not that well known or if their is no detail of a source, it is probably false.
3. Check other news articles
When reading a news article and it seems a bit sketchy or false, check maybe two or more  news source's latest headlines and see if they have an article with the same event that happened.
4. Check if it's recycled news
Sometimes news sources that are desperate for people having to read their articles, recycle old news from the past and change the people that are involved or the area that the event is located. Remember to check for that!
5. Sketchy and unrealistic
It is very obvious to tell if a news article is fake. If an article sounds really sketchy and doesn't have enough evidence to back up their information, then the best option is to carry on reading articles from another news source that is factual and provides real information.

Astria Argument

“Students don’t learn much playing this game called Astria – Countdown to Impact: Their time could be better spent doing other things”.
Do you agree, disagree or partly agree/disagree?

I disagree that students don't learn anything from this game. This game involves certain problems or questions that you would face by using your problem solving skills and it is also a good game to play collaboratively with others as you can use different perspectives to provide more information to answer the questions correctly. The interactive also includes collecting evidence of all sorts to solve challenges that you come across. Personally I think that this game is very useful for student's thinking and problem solving.

Priests, Deacons and Bishops

Becoming a Deacon in Aotearoa New Zealand is usually the final step towards becoming a priest. The responsibilities of deacons are to preach the Word of God and give homilies. They can baptise people into the Church, bless marriages and conduct funeral services.

The Priest is called to be the spiritual leader of a parish. His first responsibility as a priest is to preach and teach the Gospel. He leads the sacramental celebrations, especially the celebration of the Eucharist, the two Sacraments of Healing and Baptism. He is to build up the community of the parish leading the people to God and helping them grow in holiness.

The Bishop is called to be the leader of a diocese. His role is to be like Christ as teacher, priest and shepherd of all the People of God in his diocese. He is given the power to minster all the sacraments including Confirmation and Holy Orders.

What is the name of the Sacrament by which men are ordained as bishops, priests or deacons?
Sacrament of the Holy Orders.
1. Sign- laying on of the hands and anointing with chrism.
2. Lectionary Readings for the Sacrament.
3. Prayer of Consecration proper to each ordination.
a. Bishop
b. Priest
c. Deacon

The deacons who are about to be ordained, lie down and do certain postures and gestures as a sign of a transformation of a man into a representative of Christ on Earth. The priest puts the oil on the palms of the deacon's hands. The deacon is given a bible because he will be a minister of a Church. In some Churches, the priests are approached and are given a kiss on their hand.

Prayer of Consecration
Almighty Father,
Grant to this servant of yours
the dignity of the priesthood.
Renew within him the Spirit of Holiness.
As a co-worker with the order of bishops
may he be faithful to the ministry
that he receives from you, Lord God,
and be to others a model of right conduct.

May he be faithful in working with the order of
bishops,
so that the words of the Gospel
may reach the ends of the earth,
and the family of nations,
made one in Christ,
may become God's one, holy people.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

Do this in memory of me!

Did you know that the hole in the ozone layer can affect what happens in our future?

The Ozone layer is a part of the stratosphere that absorbs most of the sun's radiation. At ground level, the ozone gases can be harmful to life but in a higher level, it protects and absorbs the majority of ultraviolet sunlight which is very powerful source of radiant energy from the sun. Our ozone layer is like a natural sunscreen for us, if we were exposed to the sun and there was no ozone layer surrounding the Earth our skin would burn almost immediately.

A hole had been discovered in the ozone layer around the time of 1980's by scientists and it had been and still is being discussed by politicians for years now. This is also known to be titled as the ozone depletion. The ozone layer which use to be thick, has slowly become thinner every year and scientists have gathered proof that our human-made chemicals are the cause of the damage in the ozone.

Most people are trying to find as many possible ways to repair the damage that's already been done by us. We can start first by informing others about the damage we have created to our ozone and what we can do about it. Refrigerants containing CFC damages the ozone layer. CFC is a combination of carbon, hydrogen, chlorine and fluorine which are usually gases that come from refrigerants and aerosols. When the sunlight waves hit the CFC gases in the higher atmosphere, a bond between carbon and chlorine breaks. When chlorine gas from substances such as aerosols reacts with an ozone molecule it breaks it apart and creates or makes the hole larger in the ozone.

As part of trying to prevent this from maintaining it's damage to the ozone we should also start recycling fridges instead of simply throwing them away. Another reason which is causing our ozone to take damage is global warming and climate change. When our cars, trucks and buses release fossil fuel gases which is found in heavy vehicle traffic interacts with sunlight, it forms a low-level ozone. Low-level ozone can also result to widespread respiratory problems, facilitating their infections and worsening asthma. Damage to the ozone can also reduce the growth of plants and their hydration. By us starting now to prevent damage, it could also prevent future environmental disasters which may already be happening now.

I have used information from the book: Closer look at the Ozone Hole by Alex Edmonds

We should treat pests with more respect!

Today I participated in an online discussion based around how I felt about the view from a group of people known as: Nature Watcher's. This group of people believe that 'Animals who are called pests by the predator free groups should be treated with more respect'.

Animals that are called ‘pests’ by the Predator Free groups should be treated with more respect. These pests have already adapted to climbing trees and eating chick eggs. However, this does not mean that we should wipe out all pests using 1080 poison drop in the places that they roam around. These pests are use to the habit of hunting chick eggs and killing birds. It is a part of their life that we cannot take away from them. Although, I do believe that bird's lives certainly matter but is it really fair that we are killing a substantial amount of other living animals just for the safety of only these birds? We can prevent the extinction of these native birds and animals but also at the same time we can also prevent these pests from being poisoned and killed. For a solution to this problem, I personally think that we can build separate sanctuaries, where the birds can live a similar lifestyle to how they would have lived in the wild while the pests can live their normal life, without being poisoned by 1080 pellets.  Not only do the pests die from 1080 poison but any other living animal that come in physical contact with this substance can result to a very slow and torturous death and the reactions to the poison include respiratory failure, seizures and rapid labored breathing and to think about it, it is an absolutely awful experience that any innocent animal has to go through. All animal lives matter and I believe that there is always a solution to our problems if we all work together as New Zealanders to help these animals.

Sinking - Narrative

As I was swimming, I tried as many things as I could to keep myself busy, being in the water was terribly boring for me, I suppose the water was to shallow for me to be able to dive. Mum always told me never to go to far into the ocean without the supervision of an adult. But I swear that I'm more than capable of looking after myself now that I'm 12 years old, so consequently I made the decision to swim over to the deeper side and see what a swim would be like there.

As I swam further with curiosity, my body became numb from the bitter cold water that surrounded my skin. 'Maybe if I swam more briskly around, my body would warm up.' I thought. I was wrong, it was possible that I swam too far to be able to reach the surface of the sand. I panicked. I couldn't think straight with the feeling of the current pulling me away from my destination which was back at the shore. I screamed for someone to help me, but my voice had been drowned away by the sound of waves crashing against my face, I knew that I was about to sink. Millions of thoughts raced up and down my head, it was hard to calm myself down but the feeling of water restraining me from swimming back to shore didn't make anything better at all.

The ocean left me with an unpleasant stomach-turning taste, it was as if I was drinking a cup of heavily salted water and it was hard to prevent myself swallowing it. I was left feeling terribly uneasy, when suddenly I could hear a muffled voice echo through the air calling my name, it was a very familiar voice which came from my mum who was swimming without trouble to me with her hand out. A complete feeling of pure serendipity had filled me as I gripped my hand onto hers, still feeling unwell from the amount of water I had consumed. I knew well that I was extremely fortunate to be saved merely at the right time.

At the moment, the only emotion I could feel was relief and gratitude towards my mother who had helped me when I was in such grave danger.

Coda:

The moral or the meaning behind this narrative is about obedience and responsibility. It is first and foremost that we obey our parents, teachers and adults around us because they have our best interests at heart, meaning they are concerned about our safety which is most important. Being obedient requires and strengthens the value of responsibility. We have to take responsibility for the actions we take and to think properly about whether we are making the right choices.

WALHT: Write a narrative using the correct structure and language features including a range of sentence types and topic and sophisticated vocabulary.

Jesus is the Good Shepherd!

Lesson 6
These statements give a description of who Jesus is for people and tell what his mission what about.
When Jesus talks about being the vine and people bring the branches,
he is talking about how the branches receive life and nourishment from the vine rooted in the ground.
When he says he is the resurrection and the life he is saying that people will receive the gift of
God’s own life in grace, the fullness of Tapu, and through Jesus the gift of the Holy Spirit they
will have eternal life as well.  He is the way, the truth and the life because if people live in the
way he has lived with tika, pono and aroha they will receive the fullness of life and the truth
will be revealed to them.

The entrance to the enclosure for sheep in Jesus’ day was an opening in a wall or hedge.
This was where the shepherd slept. So the shepherd became the gate of the sheep enclosure.
When Jesus speaks about being the gate he is saying that it is through him that people can find
the life of God n- Te Atua.  The shepherd of Jesus’ day went before the sheep leading them to grass
and to safety, protecting them from wolves and harm.  As the good shepherd Jesus leads
people to what is good and will even lay down his life to save them.
The Good Shepherd: Jesus leading his sheep the right way.

As bread of life he feeds people on his Word and the Eucharist.  He nourishes their life in God through
grace and, increases their tapu and mana.
The “I am’ statements also show that Jesus is God.  I John 10:33 the people tell him he will be punished
by stoning because he has blasphemed, that is, he has spoken insultingly about God by calling himself
God’s Son = Te Tama a Te Atua..  That object to his claims that he and the Father - Matua are one.
Jesus tells them to look at what he is doing, for they will see that the work he is doing is the work of the
Father who is God.  His work of tika, justice, and aroha, mercy and healing will show them how he is
one with God.

In John’s first letter he says that God is light and in him there is no darkness (1 John 1:5)

Jesus says he is the light of the world.  John shows Jesus is the light of the world by writing
about him healing a blind man just after this dialogue in which he says he is the light of the world.
As the light of the world he enables people to see and this means more than just seeing what is about,
but seeing with eyes of faith and recognising Jesus for who he is.  The man who has been healed calls
Jesus Lord, professes his belief in hi and worships him - John 9: 38
