A large amount of families that came from the ship, came from Ireland. During that time,
Ireland was in the middle of a famine period, and they all would have been leaving to live
a better life in New Zealand. The Clifton Ship arrived on the 23rd of January in 1848, with
their captain Kettlewell. There was 79 pensioners, 72 women, 161 children and a surgeon,
Dr Arthur Saunders Thompsons.
